Welcome to

You've discovered the island hideaway of John Nolley and Beth Bottom here on the vast sea that is the Internet. Welcome!

A Toast to the Island Life!

We've created this site to share a slice of our lives minus the pet dander, bird screeches, cat chases, and dog howls that we experience in our fauniferous zoo each and every day.

Chateau Papillon

John and Beth recently purchased their first home together, which they have named "Chateau Papillon" in honor of its two furball inhabitants (sorry, birds & Neptune!) Read more about it in John's blog as we get renovations and other personalizations done.

2006: A Tough Year for Our Fauniferous Zoo

As the year draws to a close, we look back upon 2006 with sadness as it was indeed a tough year for our fauniferous zoo.

The year first saw the passing of Belle, whose feline leukemia and an intestinal tumor had made her life very difficult in her last few weeks.

When Rydia laid a clutch of fertile eggs the same day we had to put Belle to sleep, we felt it a sign of the cycle of life and of renewal. Alas, first young Bappy and then his half-siblings all passed away despite Rydia and Kain's best parenting and our heroic efforts. Their brief lives brought us much joy and wonder and convinced Beth that even the ugliest of babies can win over one's heart.

October was particularly difficult. Moon began breathing with difficulty in late August, and despite several thousand dollars in veterinary care, she eventually died on the morning of October 21st, as her thoracic cavity kept filling with fluid. A week later, we had to make the difficult decision to put Ziggy to sleep due to the impact his CDS or "doggie Altzheimer's" was having on his day-to-day life.

John's Bird Photography

I took up bird photography in the spring of 2006, and my first year has been an incredibly successful one in the field, with the sighting of well over 160 species. I was thrilled to have my Pileated Woodpecker photograph published in Birder's World magazine, and my female Red-winged Blackbird took 3rd place in the 2006 Huntley Meadows Nature Photography contest against some excellent competition.

We compiled some of my best photos from the year together into a book that is available at On the Wing: A Photographic Journey of John's First Year of Birding features 112 pages of birds in full color, with information on each species along with information on each location featured in the book.

Want to Help?

Beth and I are hoping to buy a home sometime in the next year, but unfortunately for us, the property values in our area have skyrocketed (in some areas doubling in three years!). You can help us realize the American dream with a small donation:

If some woman can pay off her credit cards by begging for help, and another kid can pay for college with donations of but pennies by each donor, then surely we can find a home!

Additionally, 2005-2006 were very difficult years for us in terms of veterinary expenses, with Geronimo's tracheal issues and subsequent care along with Moon's bewildering illness and death costing us several thousands of dollars. Any contributions to defray these expenses is most certainly appreciated!
